Eruption in Iceland Spring 2021

New but ancient
Eruption in Iceland Spring 2021

Rough and unformed
rests heavily in my palm
a small lava-rock
black-gray-brownish
carries with it ancientity
so primitive and exotic.

Though brand new
pressed up from the mantle
of mother Earth
few days ago
̶  young lava
made of liquid magma
boiling river of molding matter
tread through a still forming crater
on the Reykjanes peninsula.

Baptized by fire
baked, burned
raw and uneroded
at once ancient and new
element and a future ground.

Rests heavily in my palm
delivered from bowels of Earth
transformation itself
the Universe
of energy and matter
heavy and slow
in the perpetual crucible
constantly changing
form and appearance.

(Eruption in Iceland may mark the start of decades of volcanic activity. Lava began erupting on Friday, March 19, 2021 in the Geldingadalur region of Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula, possibly marking the beginning of a new period of heightened volcanic activity in the area).
